Brad Smith and Andy “Duck” Wyer have been playing together domestically and Internationally since 2005. In 2005 they debuted on the FIVB world tour with a 9th at the Palinuro Satellite, and 41st in Espinho Open, Portugal. Due to illness the team missed out on competing internationally last year, but have come back strongly with a best domestic result of 3rd at the Vodafone national tour event in St. Kilda. The team look forward to their biggest international season ever this year, and aim at qualifying at each of the 6 world tour opens they will compete in from May to July 2007.
The team is based at the Queensland Academy of Sport and are coached by the current head coach Dan Ilott. Steve Anderson also takes the team for practice, and is an invaluable resource of beach volleyball wisdom.
Beach volleyball Olympian Matt Grinlaubs was the previous QAS head coach, and coached Brad and Duck for their first 2 years together. In March 207 Matt left the QAS to become head coach of Great Britain beach volleyball in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games in Manchester. Good luck in the UK Matt, and thanks for the years of great training.
Sean Thomas and Anthony “Bundy” Wardrop are the other QAS mens team, and regular training partners of Duck and Brad. Together the four athletes are striving to create a high performance training environment in Queensland.
Nick Holmes is the teams massage therapist, and an integral part of the team. He keeps the team together physically, and those long chats while on the table no doubt have a great impact mentally, thanks Nick!
